Suck It Moves to Hollywood

Tujunga Village’s loss is Hollywood’s gain. After three years in business, Suck It has moved to Sweet, the 30,000-square-foot candy emporium at Hollywood and Highland. Owner Kaileigh Brielle says she was approached by the store’s owner, who provided a “tremendous opportunity” to expand her specialty gluten-free frozen pop business. “I just couldn't pass up his offer,” says Kaileigh. “I'm surrounded by chocolatiers and artisan candy makers. We all make our product on-site. I'm inspired daily. I'm expanding my audience to people from all over the world who come to Hollywood as a destination, but I'm also still close to my friends and Suckateers in Studio City.”  She says she is grateful to all...

A Special BBQ Bite and a Great Deal

A Special BBQ Bite and a Great Deal

SPECIAL BITE: Apparently the best part of eating beef brisket is the “burnt ends” which are rubbed, double-smoked and surprisingly tender and flavorful. Smoked and served with BBQ sauce, the ends are dubbed “meat candy.” Alex Benes, who is hailed as the "Sultan of Smoke" for his role as culinary director and partner at Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, says he discovered that when he made them as a treat for a gathering at one of the restaurants. "The reaction was off the hook," explains Alex. "Since we’re always looking to introduce new ways for our guests to enjoy different iconic BBQ items, we thought we’d share with everyone.” Alex is now testing them every Wednesday from 4 p.m. until they sell out, with...

Restaurant News: Comings and Goings

Firenze Osteria in Toluca Lake temporarily closed shop on July 31 to undergo a complete renovation with some new partnerships in the works. According to Lisa Long, who co-owns the restaurant with Chef Fabio Viviani, it is slated to re-open in late fall.  In a written statement, Lisa shared that Fabio will create new menus, including a late night supper and breakfast menu. The plans involve a new outside dining area, as well as adding "a few music people" to the team as they are adding an intimate nightclub. Burnt miso ramen and ramen burgers from the Michelin-star chef at Ramen by Omae in Sherman Oaks may be a thing of the past (or a pause), as it is currently closed. A sign on the door and a note on the website state that they are “in the process of turning...

Farmers Market Find: Buff Bake

Farmers Market Find: Buff Bake

While strolling through the Studio City Farmers Market last week, I stumbled upon uniquely flavored nut butter spreads called Buff Bake–the creation of two 20-something cousins named Ashley and Brittany whose combined interests are cooking and fitness. The business is based in Orange County and started only five months ago, but their products are already carried at a dozen farmers markets, including Studio City and Calabasas.  They carry a line of  “buff butters” and “buffins” (aka muffins) online, but only the butters are available at the farmers markets. There are five flavors available in 3.5-ounce squeeze packs or 12-ounce jars: snickerdoodle almond, cookie almond, cinnamon raisin peanut, chocolate chip peanut and cranberry coconut...

Ventura Blvd's Food Issue Party

Just in time for summer, Ventura Blvd magazine partnered with the Sportsmen's Lodge for a poolside party in celebration of our premiere Food Issue. From mac and cheese, craft cocktails to fried chicken, the newly renovated Patio Cafe served up a little something for every palate. And, to top off the evening Ventura Blvd was presented with a 'Certificate of Recognition' on behalf of the City of Los Angeles. We're blushing...thank you.

Worth the Drive: Downtown LA Food Festivals

It’s food festival season in Los Angeles. Last week we mentioned Valley restaurants involved in The Taste, but there are still more involved at the 4th Annual Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival, August 21–24 in Downtown LA (with select few in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Hollywood, as well). This event brings over 100 culinary stars together from across the nation, including some from our own backyard: Studio City-based chefs C.J. Jacobson (Girasol), Antonia Lofaso (Black Market Liquor Bar), Jeffrey Saad (La Ventura) and Fabio Viviani (Firenze Osteria), who will be hosting and participating in numerous events during the weekend.  Tickets are selling fast, so click here for general info. Neighborhood Joint: SteamPunk Coffee Bar and Kitchen

If you find yourself hungrily wandering around the east Valley or in need of a caffeine pick-me-up, consider dropping into SteamPunk Coffee Bar and Kitchen in Valley Village. It’s a hipster-looking joint with funky furniture and art-covered walls off the beaten path on Burbank Boulevard, just west of Whitsett. Think Los Feliz and Silverlake vibe in the 818.  Open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, it’s a fast, casual place serving up fun breakfast dishes, with a variation of eggs, waffles and Mexican eats, as well as salads, wraps and sandwiches. They stock limited Röckenwagner baked good usually only available on the Westside.   The unique specialty coffee and tea menu includes matcha green tea, sweet tea, Mexican mocha, dirty Chai (with a shot of...

Coming Soon: Cascabel in Toluca Lake

Coming Soon: Cascabel in Toluca Lake

Top Chef season five alum Alex Eusebio and his wife, Sara Mann Eusebio, are putting the final touches on Cascabel, described as “an entirely fresh coastal Mexican dining experience.” It is set to open mid-August. As mentioned in this column a couple of months ago, it replaces D’Cache Restaurant at 10717 Riverside Drive. The Eusebios are updating the space, which was once a Spanish-style house, with an outdoor patio, a long wooden bar and an intimate, 74-seat dining room with dark wood floors, carved exposed beams, painted turquoise tables, a hand-laid tile fireplace and an open kitchen with large glass windows. This is the second Toluca Lake venture for the couple, who opened Sweetsalt, an upscale café/bakery, in 2010. Cascabel offers a full...
