Go French in the San Fernando Valley

Go French in the San Fernando Valley

You don’t have to be French to celebrate Bastille Day on July 14. Think of that day (or any other day!) to experience one of the many multicultural restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. From casual bistro fare to more refined indulgence, there are choices for everyone. Brandywine This cozy restaurant with about a dozen booths and tables has been feeding the 818 for nearly four decades and is owned by a husband-and-wife team that make you feel like you are dining in their home. It’s definitely on the pricey side but is old-school in the best way. Peruse the menu written on a chalkboard and enjoy such classics as veal chop, steak au poivre (prepared tableside), abalone, chateaubriand and crème brûlée. If you are a fan of...

SunCafe Brings Vegan Wonders to New Digs

SunCafe Brings Vegan Wonders to New Digs

After four years of creating vegan and raw dishes, as well as helming cooking classes at SunCafe, co-owners Ron Russell and Rebecca Smith have moved their popular eatery down the street to its new location at 10820 Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, replacing the former Zach’s Café, which served up Italian food for the last 18 years (and for those who remember the ‘80s, Mary’s Lamb). The grand opening date is Wednesday, July 2. SunCafe may be sans dairy and all animal products; however, the dishes stand impressively on their own merit by balancing ingredients with uniquely delicious flavors rather than as a substitution for the “real stuff.” Yes, carnivores like it too—and there is no persistent...

Sangria Recipes from Bow & Truss

Summer means sangria time—and it is just the perfect drink for a July 4th celebration. With that in mind, here are recipes for white and red sangria courtesy of Bow & Truss in North Hollywood. Each recipe makes one pitcher. Red Sangria 1 750ml bottle malbec ½ cup Spanish brandy ¼ cup pomegranate juice ¼ cup fresh orange juice ¼ cup simple syrup (see recipe below) sliced apples, oranges and lemons (vary with season; stone fruits like peaches and plums are nice for summer) Mix all ingredients. While the sliced fruit looks best freshly sliced, it tastes best after infused in the mixture for a bit. White Sangria 1 750ml bottle chardonnay ½ cup dry sherry ¼ cup orange liqueur 3...
