Valley Restaurants To Participate in The Taste

Valley chefs are cooking up a big part in The Taste, the annual Labor Day weekend culinary event from the Los Angeles Times that will take place on the Paramount Studios back lot. Participating 818 restaurants include: Firefly, Pedalers Fork, 9021Pho, Dog Haus, Lum-Ka-Naad and Lemonade, plus cooking demonstrations by CJ Jacobson (Girasol) at a Field to Fork event on Saturday (8/30) and Jimmy Shaw (Loteria Grill) at Flavors of L.A. on Sunday (8/31). July is National Ice Cream Month, and with that in mind, we thought to share some very special recipes from Chef Jeffrey Saad’s La Ventura in Studio City. He says the flavors he creates are reflective of his travels to different regions across Mexico and Latin America.   “Yes, I do wake up thinking about ice cream,” says Jeffrey. “It is my morning inspiration on the day!” He says that the key to his ice cream is to make a paste of the flavors and then mix them into the egg and cream custard base. Hamburger Hamlet fans can stop mourning. The last remaining Sherman Oaks location at 4419 Van Nuys Blvd. will be re-opening according to a sign posted on the door: “The Hamlet is currently closed but will reopen this week under new ownership and management. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.” Tentative opening date: Thursday. Lum-Ka-Naad recently opened in Encino at 17644 Ventura Boulevard, just east of White Oak.  The original location in Northridge is known for its noodle bar and nearly 180 Northern and Southern Thai specialty dishes.  We look forward to checking it out! Summer means sangria time—and it is just the perfect drink for a July 4th celebration. With that in mind, here are recipes for white and red sangria courtesy of Bow & Truss in North Hollywood. Each recipe makes one pitcher. Red Sangria 1 750ml bottle malbec ½ cup Spanish brandy ¼ cup pomegranate juice ¼ cup fresh orange juice ¼ cup simple syrup (see recipe below) sliced apples, oranges and lemons (vary with season; stone fruits like peaches and plums are nice for summer) Mix all ingredients.
