Kale & Quinoa Vegan Café Debuts in Studio City

Vallapa Tunbuth, husband Bob, and their daughters Patty and Gabby opened Kale & Quinoa Vegan Café in the Studio City Center strip mall.

Is Kale & Quinoa Vegan Café the most on-trend restaurant in the San Fernando Valley? Possibly, with a name (and ingredients) like that at their disposal. Kale & Quinoa Vegan Café is the handiwork of Vallapa Tunbuth, husband Bob, and their daughters Patty and Gabby, who opened to start June. Vallapa and Gabby both previously worked in vegan restaurants, and the entire family is vegetarian. Now their neon sign promises to “Feed Your Soul” in Studio City Center strip mall.

The Tunbuth family’s glass-fronted space features wood tables and art-lined walls that are alternately grey, reclaimed wood and faux brick. Order at the speckled counter from a sprawling core menu that includes categories like starters, salads, soups, noodles, wraps, burgers, rices, mains and “specialty.” The latter is probably a good place to start. Consider the signature kale and quinoa salad with chopped mango, shallot edamame, pomegranate, avocado and sliced orange. Yes, you’ll find vegan substitutes for meat dishes like ribs, orange chicken and spicy catfish eggplant. In other cases, vegetables like broccoli, green beans and mushrooms are more front-and-center.

Above the counter, Kale & Quinoa Vegan Café also updates an overhead blackboard menu that features specials like kale-eggplant pad Thai, wild mushroom tom kha noodles and green curry fried rice.

To drink, expect fresh-squeezed orange juice or lemonade, Thai iced coffee or tea, and fresh young coconuts that are cracked to order. Tea and kombucha play supporting roles.
