Italian Dining Destination Opens in Westlake

Italian Dining Destination Opens in Westlake

Giardino, a new Italian dining destination, just opened in Westlake courtesy of seasoned restaurateurs Giorgio Pierangeli (Sherman Oaks’ OlivA, Brentwood’s Pecorino and Newbury Park's Local Table) and Matteo Carletti (Calabasas' Toscanova) in the former Plug Nickel. Helming the kitchen is chef Francesco Pesce (Crudo in Santa Barbara and London’s Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli). All three are from the Marche region in Italy—which in turn is the inspiration for Giardino's menu and ambience, as a "love letter," you could say, to the region. (l-r: Matteo Carletti, Chef Francesco Pesce and Giorgio Pierangeli) The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor...

The Gadarene Swine Now Open For Lunch

Chef Phillip Frankland Lee has gotten a great deal of acclaim since opening his second venture, The Gadarene Swine, in Studio City nearly two months ago. Among the brouhaha just this last week: Jonathan Gold wrote of its esteemed merits; Gayot named it one of the "25 Best Restaurants for Fall 2014"; and Mila and Ashton dined at the chef’s counter for a 10-course meal with baby Wyatt in tow. Plus there's a giant billboard over the restaurant with an image of Phillip and his pastry chef wife, Margarita, with the text "Drop Flavor Not Bombs"—so you can't miss it. Now the innovative and playful, vegetable-based restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Sunday with three new menu items as well as a...

Mercado Opens Third Location

Mercado Opens Third Location

Another “city” restaurant is now calling the outer edge of the Valley home. Jesse Gomez and chef Jose Acevedo are co-partners in Mercado—a “new-fashioned” Mexican eatery that opened its third outpost a couple weeks ago in the location that housed Spoonful and, prior to that, Henry’s Hat. Although the location lies near Universal City, it’s called Mercado Hollywood. The other two are Mercado Santa Monica and Mercado Los Angeles.   Mercado is known for their uniquely modern style with a mix of white tiles, tin ceiling, metal statement chandeliers and mirrors. This location is similar to the other locations—airy with a bar and indoor/outdoor seating; however,...
