Just in time for summer, Darryl Scherr opened The Italian Ice Shoppe in Woodland Hills, in the U-shaped Winnetka Square strip mall. The candy broker is originally from the Bronx and grew up enjoying Italian ice in the summer.
The space previously housed a Baskin-Robbins. Now a green, white and red logo—matching the colors of the Italian flag—greets customers. The interior is similarly colorful, with orange walls and two tables with orange, yellow and green chairs.
Phil Backstrom used to buy candy for vending machines from Darryl before launching a longtime career as a fireman for Riverside County and Cal Fire. They kept in touch, and now Phil helps run The Italian Ice Shoppe.
Twenty-four flavors of ice are made in-house with real fruits like cherry, cantaloupe, papaya and of course lemon. Non-fruit flavors include Ghirardelli chocolate, root beer and sweet tea. They also sell six flavors of gelato, sourced from a company in Van Nuys.
Yes, Darryl and Phil sell candy. Shelves include Swedish Fish, Bottle Caps and Now and Laters.
