Our society has become obsessed with food—from television shows to restaurants with their chefs positioned as the newest type of celebrity culture. Food combos such as the ramen burger and the "cronut" take on a life of their own. Meanwhile a large percentage of our population is without food. Perhaps the new year is the time to invest in food a little differently—and think of it in a way to help others. Here are four San Fernando Valley-based organizations devoted to help feed those in need all year round.
This is the longest-running organization in the U.S. that works to end senior hunger by delivering meals to homes. The 818 base is at oneGeneration in Van Nuys. You can help by becoming a hands-on volunteer delivering meals or donate to meals. A donation for as little as $35 will contribute to five meals. mowaa.org/take-action
Food Forward is a North Hollywood-based organization that collects fresh local produce from farms, farmers markets and backyard trees that would otherwise go to waste to help feed low-income families, homeless individuals, veterans and more. They distribute 100% of the produce to food banks. Go to the website to check out weekly events and how to volunteer. foodforward.org
SOVA Community Food & Resource Program
SOVA is a Van Nuys-based organization—part of Jewish Family Services—that serves about 12,000 people per month. There are various ways to volunteer or donate, including working at a pantry and organizing food drives. Other ways to contribute include donations, a virtual food bank and centerpieces for events that are later donated. jfsla.org/sova
Donate non-perishable food items or volunteer at this Van Nuys based nonprofit that is part of the Rescue Mission Alliance. They are associated with a dozen food pantries in the Valley. valleyfoodbank.org
