North Hollywood has one of the highest concentrations of Thai restaurants in L.A. JakkaPat Thai recently joined the fray, serving a notable roster of seafood dishes. I fully expect this place (which took over for another Thai eatery) to become a neighborhood favorite.
The owners devote a fair bit of the menu to categories like fish and seafood but go beyond the standard fare with options like pla lard prik—deep-fried pompano slathered with spicy chile sauce.
With Garlic Supreme Shrimp Supreme, the chefs sauté sweet shrimp with a potent mix of roasted garlic, cilantro and white pepper. Fried garlic and cilantro cap each order, which comes on a bed of cooling chopped cabbage.
Scallop pad see ew is another satisfying plate. JakkaPat stir-fries flat, wide rice noodles with scrambled egg, broccoli and mid-sized scallops in dark soy sauce that aids smoky caramelization. This dish doesn’t have much pop, but diners can up the ante with the caddies of jalapeño-infused vinegar, ground chiles and spicy hot sauce on the table.
My biggest complaint is that the tantalizing grilled prawns I saw online were not available. The waiter informed me the prawns are just for the staff. Whomp whomp.
Apparently the restaurant’s name refers to Chakkaphat Phaen Phaeo of Ayutthaya, a king in the 15th century. Thankfully, reasonable prices ensure JakkaPat Thai is a terrific option for us commoners.
