Set Sail for Seafood at Laurel Point in Studio City

Laurel Point is the latest restaurant launch from Grill Concepts, Inc., featuring seasonal, sustainable seafood at Laurel Promenade in Studio City.

August 1 marked the opening of Laurel Point, a part of The Point Restaurants from Grill Concepts, Inc. The company behind The Grill on the Alley, Daily Grill and Public School is now betting on seasonal, sustainable seafood—first in Studio City and later at sister restaurant Wewatta Point in Denver.

The second-floor space in Laurel Promenade, a strip mall located at the bustling corner of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard, features a nautical design. The blue façade incorporates painted ship knots and a fishhook that’s dug into the "o" in "Point." The airy interior features “gills” painted on the floor by the bar, exposed wood rafters painted white and high-backed booths. Laurel Point replaces the Studio City branch of another restaurant from Grill Concepts, Inc.

Appetizers include crab deviled eggs with smoked roe and cast-iron mussels with a broth of garlic, shallots, herbs and preserved lemons. Sushi like ahi tuna and salmon are available undressed or dressed in rolls like crab and hamachi with avocado, mango, tobiko and lime. Seasonal oysters are served with yuzu kosho mignonette or Rockefeller-style with creamed kale, panko and Parmesan. Sandwiches include lobster roll, soft-shell crab BLT and oyster po’ boy.

An entire menu section is reserved for the fishmonger, with selections like ruby red trout, Alaskan halibut and Pacific swordfish with enhancements like grilled with Tabasco compound butter, “Cantonese style” or blackened with rémoulade sauce. Dinner brings dishes like cioppino and whole Thai snapper for two with cilantro ginger vinaigrette.

Not all plates star seafood. You can also get steak frites, Madras chicken curry salad, summer squash linguine, K-town crispy chicken sandwich or a grass-fed burger with pimento cheese, ito, pickles and “point sauce.”

To drink, expect five craft beers on draft, even more beer in bottles, 18 wines by the glass and internationally inspired cocktails like Naughty Pig with Pig’s Nose Scotch, beet, blueberry and lemon. Also, oyster shooters with house Bloody Mary mix and a choice of spirit, or Asian-inspired sake oyster shooter with ponzu, cucumber, shallot, sesame oil and rice vinegar.
