Special Holiday Dining Options in the Valley

Learn about three of the Valley’s best Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dining options – plus a surf & turf special and a terrific option for people longing for Mexican holiday traditions.

Mistral

Mistral, Henri Abergel’s Sherman Oaks standard for French-inspired cuisine since 1988, hosts a luxurious, three-course, $95 Christmas Eve dinner. Highlights include acquerello risotto with wild Burgundy escargots and assorted mushrooms; crispy duck confit with orange-ginger-honey sauce, potatoes au gratin and haricots verts; and vanilla bean gelato profiteroles and salted caramel sauce, though other options are available for each course. Gird yourself for the world with a final choice of Michelle’s cookies, coffee or tea.

Saddle Peak Lodge

Chef Adam Horton is serving a four-course Christmas Eve feast for $95 per person at Saddle Peak Lodge in the Santa Monica Mountains. Start with roasted chestnut soup with black truffle, celery and apple. “Christmas Ham,” a riff on the holiday standby, teams crispy pork belly with honey glaze, cherry and pineapple. Roasted turkey is the main course, plated with mashed potatoes, sausage stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, mushrooms and haricots verts. The meal concludes with rich molten chocolate cake and peppermint candy cane ice cream.

The Front Yard

The Front Yard, a California eclectic restaurant on the grounds of The Garland (hotel) in North Hollywood, typically celebrates holidays in style. From noon to 8 p.m., they’re serving a Christmas buffet for $55 per adult and $25 for kids ages 12 and younger. The menu is expected to be substantial and will include fire-roasted tomato soup, barley butternut squash risotto, chorizo and sage bread pudding, buttermilk and rosemary brined turkey, and Poblano chile slow-roasted prime rib.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Through January 3, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar is serving a three-course “surf ‘n’ turf” menu  for $99 per person. The luxurious meal starts with a choice of lobster bisque or seafood Louie wedge salad co-starring crab meat and shrimp. The main course pairs an Australian lobster tail with 8-ounce filet mignon, sautéed mushroom medley, merlot salt and cabernet demi-glace. For dessert, indulge in warm butter cake with chocolate sauce, candied walnuts, Chantilly cream, caramelized Bosc pears and a caramel sauce drizzle.

Fleming’s also hosts Christmas Eve Brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $47 per person. Expect a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert. Options include eggs Benedict with sliced filet mignon, house-made crab cake with a tomato Hollandaise and cinnamon apple brioche French toast.

Casa Vega

Casa Vega, the family-run Mexican restaurant that’s thrived in Sherman Oaks for more than six decades, is offering two different holiday specials. Through December 24, each table receives one packet of special banuelos at the end of each meal. A banuelo is a traditional Mexican cookie coated with cinnamon and sugar.

Through December 31, the Vega family is selling tamales platters, served with hot sauce and cooling Mexican crema. Fillings include beef, chicken, vegetable and sweet corn. Tamales cost $36 for a dozen frozen tamales and $40 for 10 ready-to-eat tamales.
