Kai Poke in Woodland Hills Opens

Poké is ubiquitous in L.A., but brand new Kai Poké in Woodland Hills proves that originality is still possible in this crowded culinary space. The word “kai” translates from Hawaiian as ocean, and the influence is evident on a menu where raw fish dominates. At least on your initial visit, bypass more common poké proteins like tuna and albacore in favor of more creative rice (or salad) bowls.
Executive chef Huntley See has crafted a menu that considers local sourcing, seasonality and sustainability. Silky salmon comes tossed with spicy miso, Fresno chilies and cucumbers. Flaky soy-glazed cod is the only cooked fish dish and co-stars shishito peppers, pickled ginger and red onion strands. You’ll even find a colorful, texture-rich veggie bowl loaded with roasted beets, shredded kale, pickled ginger, red onion, toasted almonds and crushed macadamia nuts.
Each bowl comes with a choice of white rice, brown rice, kale salad with apple cider vinegar, or “nacho style” on crispy wonton chips. Kai also provides the option to build your own bowl. Just pick a base, protein, sauce and toppings.
Diners can complement their meal with an iced hibiscus tea or judiciously sweet house-brewed lemonade accented with basil.
Oceanic decor includes fish scales painted on the south wall, fish mural and swirling sea blue floor. Order from a rounded marble counter and sit at either wood banquettes or at umbrella-shaded patio tables.
