Calabasas Road just west of Valley Circle is starting to look like a sure-fire hot spot for a restaurant/bar crawl. Joining Pedalers Fork and Sagebrush Cantina on this historical strip of what's known as Old Calabasas is The Six Restaurant which replaced the short-lived Guido's (and Gaetano's before that).
Following West L.A. and Studio City, this is the third location for restaurateurs Jake King and Will Karges who’ve established a popular following for their American gastropub that is designed with recycled and found materials of copper, wood crates and sheet metal. I’ve eaten at both locations, so I'm anxious to see this rendition, which they call The Chowhouse, as it is the most expansive of the three at 5000 square feet with a bourbon lounge (currently being completed) and two bars with a full liquor license serving specialty brews, a fine wine selection and signature cocktails — with a couple named specially for the city itself — the Calabasas Mule and the Calabasas Heat. Also upcoming is a "Secret Bourbon Society" with personal lockers, so stay tuned for that news soon.
The seasonal menu emphasizes the concept of “six” in all categories — beer, wine, starters, pizzas, entrees, sides and dessert — and changes every few months. That being said, there are some stand out menu regulars, including The Six Burger (with bleu cheese, onion ring and tomato on a brioche bun), organic jidori chicken, potato crusted salmon, mac n' cheese, roasted cauliflower and the turkey joe sliders—and not to be missed — a taste of the banana cream pie (with an oreo crust) or s'mores tort (with chocolate ganache). After all, you only live once.
