Vines to Wines Sells Small-Batch Bottles in Sherman Oaks

Vines to Wines specializes in boutique wines and small batch spirits at a Sherman Oaks shop run by two friends who met in Manhattan.

Ventura Boulevard has its share of grocery and liquor stores, but finding interesting boutique wines can be a challenge. That has changed with the recent opening of Vines to Wines in Sherman Oaks.

“We go through small-batch distributors, so you won’t find anything you see here at Ralphs,” a salesperson quipped during my recent visit. The shelves are categorized by region, with wine from places like California, France and Italy. There are special sections for staff picks, $15 & under, kosher and organic, and a fridge stocked with chilled bottles. Vines to Wines also sells limited-production liquor.

Co-owner Eddie Deng explains the criteria. “In order for a wine to be sold at our store, it has to have two things: a great story (whether it be about the winemaker or the origins of the estate where its made), and it has to taste good. We feel that sometimes wine can get lost in the details because it is such a vastly complicated subject, but ultimately it’s a food so it has to taste delicious. Think balance, and also the spark of joy it brings when you take that first sip.”

Three picks Eddie highly recommends:

  1. Klee pinot noir, Oregon. “Beautiful notes of fresh red and dark fruits with just the right hint of brightness and acidity. We actually like this semi-chilled!”
  2. 12 Volts Tierre De Mallorca, Spain. “Dark, luscious and complex with smoky tobacco and chocolate notes, and it’s the perfect companion for those brisk winter nights.”
  3. Pierre-Gimonnet, Champagne, France. “Lovely aromas of ripe apricot and so many refined layers on the palate—a beautiful Champagne that stands up to bottles twice its price.”

Sherman Oaks was a natural choice for Eddie and business partner Cattariya “Kat” Khooharatanchai. “The location seemed like it was close to a community that appreciated wine,” he says. “There is a wine bar a few blocks down [Augustine], and it always seemed busy. We felt the people of the neighborhood had an astute interest in fine wines that were off the beaten path.”

So far, locals are meeting their expectations.
