Joe Hlavenka, owner of Personal Training Institute (PTI), wants you to know that PTI is not a traditional gym. With PTI’s certified fitness trainers and nutritionist on staff, all clients receive a customized, one-to-one training program and nutrition plan based on their individual fitness and weight-loss goals. Clients work out with a personal trainer at every visit, and all programs combine strength training, cardio and nutrition. “We partner with our clients to ensure they make their health and fitness goals a reality,” Joe tells us about PTI’s very personalized service.

Was there a defining moment that guided you to where you are now?

“I was about to turn 39 and took a close, hard look at myself. I’d been smoking for more than 20 years, was 50 pounds overweight and hadn’t exercised in years. I didn’t like what I saw, so I made myself a promise that by the time I turned 40, I would be in the best shape of my life. I quit smoking, took control of my diet and began running and cycling. And I’ve been involved in health and fitness ever since.”

What’s one trend that is affecting fitness today?

“There’s nowhere for people to go who are serious about improving their fitness and health. Big box gyms are becoming places where people hang out and socialize. At PTI, we are very results-oriented. We care about changing lifestyles and creating accountability.”

What do you like to do for fun, when you’re not at work?

“I like to explore LA. The Hollywood Bowl is my favorite LA venue, but I can often be found at the Studio City Farmers Market, the Observatory in Griffith Park and every once in a while on one of the city’s golf courses.”
