Not many L.A. restaurants can claim 40 years of service, but longtime North Hollywood favorite Salomi Indian Cuisine celebrates the big 4-0 this year. To mark the occasion, the family-run spot recently moved from the NoHo Arts District to a nearby plaza and rebranded from their previous name, Salomi Indian & Bangladesh Restaurant.
Salomi continues to serve north Indian and Bangladeshi comfort food. Persian chicken biryani is particularly noteworthy, apparently inspired by how Iranian people eat the one-pot dish cooked with rice and spices and topped with a fluffy fried omelet. In this case, the pot features basmati rice infused with onions, garlic, turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon and bay leaves, studded with juicy white and dark meat chicken chunks. The hearty dish is enjoyable as is, but Salomi also serves each order with a tomato-based sauce featuring the same spices and vegetables like carrots, peas, green beans and zucchini. Spoon sauce over the biryani for fuller flavor.
The restaurant also features a deep curry roster. Lasoni features a choice of protein cooked in a punchy blend of spices, herbs, ginger and heavy garlic. Salmon is a good match. Pasanda is a distinctively fragrant green curry crafted with almonds and more of Salomi’s signature spices.
House-baked breads include Kabuli naan, inspired by the flavors of Kabul, Afghanistan. In this case, the puffy, blistered flatbread is stuffed with a sweet mix of grated coconut, almond slivers and raisins.
Abdul Kadir and wife Marjory founded Salomi, named for a family member, and nephew Helal Ahmed carries on their traditions. He hails from Sylhet, Bangladesh, and now presides over an airy space with burgundy-clothed tables, art-lined mauve walls and moody sitar music.
